Can Trauma Be Passed From Parent to Child? The growing science behind intergenerational trauma could give us powerful tools for building resilience.

Intergenerational trauma, also known as transgenerational trauma, is a term used to describe the transfer of psychopathology from the first generation of trauma survivors to the subsequent generations oof the survivors via mechanisms similar to complex post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) whereby an individual experiences the acute stressors directly. Sadly, many families “cope” with inter-generational trauma by employing two unhealthy coping mechanisms: Denial – refusing to acknowledge the trauma happened Minimization – ignoring the impact of the trauma and making the traumatic experience appear smaller than it really is Intergenerational transmission of trauma may be understood as the ongoing impact of traumatic events and situations that happened in prior generations and continues to impact the current generation. Intergenerational trauma occurs when trauma is transferred from one generation of survivors to others. Even though this generation did not survive the trauma, per se, it gets passed down from parents to children and continues a legacy of pain and denial of the trauma. Sometimes trauma is transferred within the genes.
